Well all- I made it! 4700 miles and 6 long days but we made it. I found all that has been written about the drive on this forum to be worth it's weight in gold. I would like to add to the pot of advise.

I am a single mom traveling with a 13 y/o son. Did I have custody papers or power of attorney on me to take him across the border? No!!!! I had to spend some time at the Canadian border and speak with immigrations. Then coming back into AK, same thing, only they didn't make me talk with immigrations.

It was a beautiful drive and quite an experience! The GPS system was worth every penny I paid for it, the milepost was so helpful but could not find it anywhere until Dawson's Creek. Of course it had a paragraph on transporting a child not with both parents!

Thanks for all your advice and support!!

That's really good advice, Desflurane. A few years ago my father drove one of my nieces up and got total hell at the border--they did everything but accuse him of being an abductor and by the time the ordeal was over the poor girl was a nervous wreck in tears. But they have to do it and if it saves even one kid it's worth it.

So right Metlakatla, when we came up I made sure I had the court papers for the grandaughter that lives with me, as well as school records with my name on them, and birth certificates for her and I, as well as her mother to prove the lineage - which was easier for us that it would have been for your dad. I have a granddaughter up here now from MN that I made sure her mother sent notarized paper saying man guy's daughter could bring her, and that I can can make emergency decisions for her along with copy of her mom's birth certificate and drivers license. Overdoing it with the paperwork is way better than not - but we went into Canada they never asked for anything for Lizzy or I, was just interested in walking through the 5th wheel, and looking at the guns... When we came into Alaska - had to just show the legal papers saying I had her and my ID. Like you said, if it saves one child....is worth it!!!
