Hi, I live in Anchorage and booked a ticket to be in Barrow Sept 3-5. I also reserved a room at the NARL hotel, because it was the cheapest I found. Short of calling them, I am confused that I can't seem to find it on a map. I am a walker by nature and had imagined that I would walk to NARL when my flight gets in (around 8pm at night). Is this a foolish/unreasonable idea?

It's 5 miles or so, maybe 6?
NARL is the old Naval Arctic Research Lab, sort of a "suburb" of Barrow, and is half way from the village of Barrow to Point Barrow. Today it is mostly owned by Iligsagvik College and a few commercial enterprizes. The NARL Hotel is basically an operation of the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC), meant to provide rooms for visiting scientist working at BASC.
There are other small facts you'll need to know, which are too numerous to list here. Those would be how to deal with polar bears. The beach between Barrow and NARL is a common place for bears to be sighted. Last weekend, as an example, there were 14 bears (counted from a helicopter) on the beach within 10 miles of Barrow at one point. At another point I heard (but did not confirm more than 3) that there were a total of 9 different bears actually in town at one time! Half of those were chased out of town in the direction of NARL.
An alternative, of course, is DO NOT WALK between NARL and Barrow. A cab will cost something like $9.

That sounds like very solid advice and I am not even going to barrow..
Since you'll be all alone... it can shorten your period of, errr, anxiety. But file the front sights off so you don't get hurt putting the barrel in your mouth.
What's up Floyd? 9 polar bears in town and no pictures? that would have been great.
I have some, but none that I'm willing to post.
I just don't have much interest in spending money on bear pictures, and because they are both spread out over twenty miles of beach and are chased off by the NSB Department of Wildlife as soon as they come close to town, it's pretty much a hit or miss deal without a significant investment in spotting them.
Added to that is the fact that another local photographer specializes in polar bears. He did tours out to Point Barrow for years mostly as a way to pay for doing polar bear photography!
On the other hand, if you like images of Snowy Owls... I have a few thousand (perhaps more than just about anyone). I probably like this one the best, and have released it on the Internet in this small format, but I also sell full resolution prints at 11x14 or 13x19. It is available printed on T-Shirts from John Falk at Today in Barrow.com.
