Nah, it just looked funny at the time. Offensive is swearing at someone and name-calling.

Default Tanks a lotte!

Thanks to everyone for responding to this post. I know you've heard this stuff a thousand times. I will be trying to get in touch with Nephler; he made it, and who knows, maybe we are kindred spirits.

I really hate to leave Michigan, but I have to be able to offer my kids a good life. Right now, the way it is here, we have all the costs associated with "the good life" without the actual "good life."

Alaska seems like a place where a smile really means a smile; where you could work hard, get to know people, and decently raise your children. We are not looking to "find ourselves," we are looking for fresh clean air, fresh clean water, possibility of buying and maintaining our own land, and some semblance of the individualism that gave birth to our country. We also love proximity to wilderness and wildlife; we have some experience in this, not just watching "Survivorman."

Snow and hard work does not frighten us, but we'd like to find a fair playing field. Michigan seems to offer that less and less. We love the U.P. of Michigan, but there is very little work there. See any number of posts in the MI forum called "Poverty Trap".

What I'm really unsure of is how to go about finding a job in a completely different region than where I live. I've never done it. It's a bit intimidating, a bit exciting, sort of like the wait for a roller coaster ride.

We currently have 2 welders on the job here in Anchorage. Having certs is a better way to go. We are currently full up, but you might try CH2M Hill and CE2 Engineers. Slope work isn't too bad, 2 weeks on, 2 off is the average.

Welding work is probably easier to find in Anchorage than in Juneau - but with a nursing degree, your wife could land a primo job pretty much anywhere in the state.

You can also look at State of Alaska Home Page and find ALL of the state jobs that are open (can't apply for most unless you're a resident, but it'll give you an idea of what's available where). Good luck!
