Does anyone have experience commuting between Whittier and Anchorage?
What are winter road conditions?
How often are there closures for avalanches?
Know of any carpooling options?
Thanks!

I suppose it can be done but it would be a bummer commute with the tunnel and all. Are you talking about a daily commute?

Others on here probably know about the tunnel schedule better than I.

There is some pretty crazy weather around there. I was waiting for the tunnel during a wind/rain storm and took a picture of a waterfall, falling UP the mountain. the wind was so strong that when a gust came it blew the water straight up the cliff. After waiting for about 40 minutes they told us that the tunnel would be closed for the rest of the day due to the storm. That would be a bummer when you were coming home from a long day.

The tunnel wait is about 20 minutes, and the road closes about 2 times a winter for avalanches. It also shuts down for fatality and injury accidents. Winter drive is hard. A hundred nasty curves along the Turnagain Arm, and a lot of people forget how to drive in snow. We're talking 1-1/2 to 2 hours each way in winter, and summer's got construction and tourists.

Whittier itselg isn't all that pretty either, but nature viewing is great.

It's an idea, but we would be talking about a daily commute. I've visited Whittier half a dozen times, but haven't made the drive in (serious) winter. I must be one of a handful of people who thinks BTI (the tower) is beautiful-looking building (and yes, I've been inside). It's my unrealistic idea to live there and not give up my job in Anchorage. (My supervisor seems to think there exist people who commute from Whittier, but I have yet to find them).

Right, cause they're still stuck waiting for the tunnel to open!
