I am driving from Haines to Anchorage. Wondering if a Sat phone is a good idea. I am squared away in other details. 4WD etc etc.

Default unnecessary...unless

Unnecessary...unless you get really unlucky. It's true that plenty of that route doesn't have any cellphone coverage at all, but people seemed perfectly capable of driving before cell phones were invented.

It doesn't hurt to let someone who cares know where you're going and when you'll be there, thats just common sense. Some folks try to travel with a group of other vehicles when the weather is really cold (negatives, degrees F.) and it's always a good idea to carry adequate clothes and basic survival gear.

That said, that particular route is busy enough that you'll rarely go a whole day without seeing another vehicle unless it's the dead of winter.

Sat phones don't always work, anyway. My son said there are two of them on the boat he's on, but they are either anchored up behind a mountain that blocks the connection to the satellite, or the boat is moving so much the connection keeps breaking up, so they are relatively useless, except as another way to spend $$.
