My husband and I plan on moving to Alaska. I have heard many good things but what is the downside besides the weather? And how cold is the weather really? I live in the south and today it was close to 70 and going to be close to 80 by the end of the week!

The weather is not bad if you like it. It is long though. Unless you love Winter(like me).

Not to be smarmy but if you Google something like "Alaskan Weather Reports" or even go to this site,,,

http://www.arh.noaa.gov/

That'll give ya a purdy darn good idea of what the weather is like.

The downside?

We ain't there yet but the population numbers do it fer us.

Downside?

OK, It will be more expensive than where you or I live now.

What part are you planning to move to? The downsides I've heard newbies and even old timers complain about was the weather. Winters are long and depending upon which part of AK you are in, daylight hours can be short. Winters can start as early as September and go on to April. However, by April the snow melts much quicker, but again depends upon which part you are in. Other complaints are that the ice remains under the snow all winter. Other complaints are people feeling isolated because you can't drive out to another State as you can in the lower 48. You either drive out of Alaska to the lower 48 which can take days depending on where you are going, take a ferry or a plane. Some parts of AK. are only accessible by plane or boat. Again, it all depends on what part you are moving to.

Well me downside is anything bad. The weather to me is a downside because anything below 40 is COLD. LOL
Are the people nice to "outsiders"? Is it really that much more expensive to live there? Here bread like $1 milk $3.99 for store brand drinks about $4 for 12 pack!

Double those prices and you will be in the ballpark for what it will cost you in Anchorage. Even more outside of Anchorage.

If you consider +40°F temperatures a "downside", then by all means do not move to Alaska because you will be miserable.
