Yup, you should'a snatched up that 300. Weatherby makes great firearms, even in their low-end lines.
As for rifle calibers, I have a .223 and a 45/70. Solves everything I need them to, depending on the load. (But I wouldn't mind a 300 at all.)

One of my professors actually hunts with the Weatherby 300.

I finally said to heck with it and I got me one. ) It is not the new shinny one I saw at the gun show, but it is an older shinny one with a few scratches, that I won't have any problem taking with me out in the woods for a week at a time. I put the .308 round next to the 300 and what a difference in size! I didn't know it was so much bigger. I just got ammo for it today and that wasn't an easy task, so I will be taking it to the range tomorrow, can't wait. I bet it will deliver a punch......to my shoulder :O)..

Well having a bigger gun than is needed to hunt deer, moose or caribou is not a bad deal. There will be a once in a lifetime or more where there will be a bear trying to take your hunt from you. Having a bit of over kill isn't such a bad time as not having it and needing it.

A .22 will kill a 1000 lb Brown/Grizzly Bear, but the point is to do it before you are stomped into the ground first... That is why most Alaskan Guides carry not much less than a 300, but most prefer the 338 instead.

When I fly, I carry a .44 with me as a shoulder gun, but carry a 870 12 Ga. with the bear barrel and slugs and buck shot every other round, in a camp on a river bar, there isn't much better for backup at less than 50 feet. If I go hunting, I have a Remington .300 I will carry for just about any occasion.

I don't hunt much any more, but do go alot... Mostly to camp out at either the cabin or just to be "Out"...

I have to agree, I enjoy the camping just as much, if not more, than the huntin.....course, the game gives me plenty of jerky meat for the year . Going to go for elk next year, I've been making more jerky this last year.
