What a great day in Valdez! It was 81 degrees most of the drive down here. Was pretty darn hot walking around town this afternoon. Thank goodness for the little icecream stand! Drove out Dayville Road and saw a blackie with 3 cubs, and a brownie with 4 cubs! The brownies were fishing next to the hatchery (or what ever that place is) right in the salt water! Got some great shots. Gonna spend another day and night and check out the museums etc.

On a side note...that Caribou Inn restraunt in Glennallen SUCKS!

Is that place still awful? It sucked when I stopped there in the winter of 2007.

I don't know if it's still open, but when you head north from Valdez just before the Copper Center cut off, there is a small Cabin looking restaurant with "Pizza" on the front sign on the left side of the road. They have good pizza there. Another good place for a burger is the Brown Bear Rhodehouse five miles outside of Glennallen on the right side of the highway.

Looks to be some younger cooks in the place who are clueless. I'm no cook...but even I would have been embarrassed to send out what they did from the kitchen. Normally it is pretty hard to screw up a cheeseburger...but these guys have it mastered.

Nice cool morning in Valdez. But supposed to be sunny again today. Found a little watering hole that serves $2.00 Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Will be checking into that later today.

Is that price for a kegful? That's some horrific beer. I suppose if that's all that was available I'd have to go for it.

Just the thought frightens me to no end.

Yeah, that's the hatchery. I work there! That family of brownies has been around for a few weeks, and were around a lot last year as well. It can be a pain trying to get any work done outside when they're roaming all over the place, but it's sort of fun, too. Where was the blackie? Haven't seen it, but have heard there was one with three.

I'm a pretty big beer snob, but I'll admit that I was drinking (free) warm PBR last Thursday night after four hours of trail clearing out by the glacier. Hard work, beautiful scenery, good people...didn't care what kind of beer it was one bit.

The blackie with 3 cubs was across the street at that hydro electric place. Right next to the big white tank! Saw the brownie sow and 4 cubs up the road wandering down Ambercrombie Creek (or river) this afternoon. Along with another sow and single cub. And then a blackie with one cub this evening behind one of those tidal pools along the road...between the hatchery and the refinery? Lot's of bear action the last two days.
Going to head back toward Girdwood tomorrow. I've been running my Mom into the ground! She needs a break.

Yeah, those brownies have been wandering back and forth for the last week. Thought they were gone over to Abercrombie, then they showed back up again. I hadn't seen the blackie families over there yet. I'm surprised the one with three cubs is hanging out right where those brownies are. They generally go right up that hill to the left of the hydro plant's fence in between fishing trips.

Well, you do have a dog named Brewski.
