Hello everyone,

With a cruise out of Whittier coming up, and getting to spend a few days in Anchorage beforehand, I am planning what to load onto my ipod to make the experience even better.

What songs make you think of your home in Alaska when you travel far away?

I have stolen some ideas from another forum, but wanted to ask my Alaskan friends here for their input. Here is what I have so far:

John Denver: Alaska & Me
The Bee Gees: Road to Alaska
Johnny Horton: North to Alaska
Michelle Shocked: Anchorage
Dave Dondero: The Prince William Sound
Lou Reed: Stephanie Says (I haven't heard it, but apparently he speaks of Alaska)

What can you add to the list?

As an extra challenge while you are at it, what songs spring to mind for Hawaii, Russia, Asia and cruising? (I already have the Hawaii five-o and the love boat themes ready to go!!!)

What gets you in Alaskan mood is what gets you groovy. I'll listen to anything, but to force myself to listen to anything "Alaskan" just to get in "that" mood is kinda wishfull thinking IMHO. But if it just so happenes that you enjoy them tunes, all the better. Than again what do I know, I've never been to Alaska. Does it matter if it is Alaska or Washington or Illinois? Nope. If it's where you wish to be, your kind of music will make you happy there.

Kinda the same thing for me. Not necessarily a song about Alaska per se, but the lyrics of the first verse of "Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver always bring back the feelings I experienced when I first came to Alaska:

He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Comin' home to a place he'd never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door

When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hangin' by a song
But the string's already broken and he doesn't really care
It keeps changin' fast and it don't last for long
