I am going to be moving to Alaska in December 2009 or January 2010. Do I have to be in Alaska by January 1 in order to be eligible for the permanent fund dividend, or would I still be eligible if I moved to Alaska later in the month of January?

Yes, you need to be here a full calendar year to qualify - January 1 to December 31. So if you can swing it, best to get here in December. Otherwise, if you show up on January 2, you'll basically be waiting a full 2 years to become eligible!

To be eligible for a PFD, you must have been an Alaska resident for the entire calendar year preceding the date you apply for a dividend and intend to remain an Alaska resident indefinitely at the time you apply for a dividend. There are other criteria for eligiblity under Alaska Statute 43.23.005 and AS 43.23.008.

Silly details....

Seriously though, I hope your not one of those people planning to come to Alaska for the PFD. It won't support anyone's lifestyle and at best, only gives people some change in the big picture of what it costs to live here. While the average family needs about fifty thousand a year (plus or minus) to have the basics of a good life, the PFD may cover a months worth of heating fuel or some other one of life's needs...

So I would hope you are moving to Alaska to be here for the lifestyle, and not for something that may go the way of the DODO in the near future. Being here and not having a job is pretty much like being between a rock and a hard place. January is a really tough month to move here unless you have a job and place to stay lined up in advance, the long cold dark days aren't as bad as the long cold dark nights.

By the way, it won't be anything near what it was last year.

If the permanent fund dividend is what is motivating you to move to alaska I wouldnt waste my time. The cost of living is much higher in Alaska and jobs are pretty scarce this year. I've been living in Alaska since 96 and this year has been a hard one and winter is almost here which will get harder. Unless you have a place, family, or friends to stay with up hear while you find work I wouldn't count on the dividends.

OMG!! It's not just me then!! Chenling Must have hotmail. I was on vacation for 2 weeks, did not even check my email and my home computer was off. When I got back I had some messages from friends asking WTH I was on for sending them "hinkey" messages about buying electronics on some website. Got it taken care of then about 3 hours ago I noticed my hotmail account had emaild the message again to my gmail account. I have a feeling it has something to do with posting on craigslist. THat is what I did right before I left on vacation. I never put my email address, just the automated one. Hmmmmm Very HINKY!
