Tips according to service. After all the servers are aware where most of their income is coming from, aren't they? If some are ignorant enough not to care, what the heck. No tip is not enough- a complaint is in order.

One of the many nice things about Iceland is that there is no tipping in that country. None whatsoever. Tipping has gotten out of hand in America. I have a deep-seated aversion to being gamed.

According to this, the gratuity is already "included" in the bill.

When you say gratuity, it is included in the bill as a charge, just as your food, drinks, etc. Tipping is where you get to decide how much or how little...

Now that is funny, you are so far to the left you don't mind having the Government taking from those that "have" from working hard to give to those that don't care to work and pull their own, and I am not talking about those that are truely in need of assistance, but the freeloaders.

That is the real "Gamed"....

That may be true in restaurants, but in Iceland no tip is given or expected for ANY service - taxis, handlers, etc etc. Now Iceland is not cheap. But the absence of tipping culture makes for a much more pleasant experience.

Star,

Could you please re-translate what you have written above when your mind is a little less muddleheaded? I know that could take a lifetime, but I'll wait.

Yes tipping is deciding on how much "you" want to give, however, they are still paying a percent that will supposedly be used to tip the waiters and waitresses. I prefer to make my own decision on what to give. So gratuity in essence is tipping, only with the restaurant, etc. making that decision. It's still money the consumer is paying out of pocket over the actual cost of the bill.

I have a couple of non-American acquaintances who refuse to tip when they come here because they think it is wrong that the restaurant does not bear the burden of a proper wage for servers, and instead puts the burden on the customer. Of course, if the restaurant paid a living wage, the cost would go into the price of your food.

So because they feel they are so principled and making a stand against the restaurant owners, they screw the servers in the process. Nice principle!

Regardless, tipping is a cultural norm in the US. People who don't like it need to get over it, because it's been a common practice for a long time.

I will agree though that seeing tip jars in ever kind of establishment is getting a bit over the top!

Tipping is not a right. It should be a voluntary act in every sense, one that is inspired by a feeling that actuates one to give. Tip jars all over the place FOR DOING NOTHING is not a "cultural norm." Unless you mean freeloading is.

What you call "cultural norm" I call a rotten habit. And in this the US is not unique (cue for Moose to jump in).
