Bear Kills Moose in Alaska Driveway as Residents Watch (Anchorage: home, high school)

HOMER, Alaska — Odd sounds outside their home woke Gary and Terri Lyon early Sunday morning, so Gary got up to check it out. He looked outside and saw a 500-pound grizzly bear killing an adult moose in their driveway.

No way! We're gonna stop at the wildlife park in Portage so you can see what they look like, and then maybe...just maybe we'll see one on the drive to Seward. Might even have a 50/50 chance of hitting one on the highway! And we'll let you get out and make sure it's dead! If your real quick you can drag it into the van before it regains consciousness!

wildlife park is good bears attacking "stanley" I know is part of nature but one part I think I can do without.
When I lived in PA I use to have deer whistlers on the front of my car because of the deer in the road issue. We had that problem while driving at night. Is it different in AK do they wander the road during the day.

I've heard of getting goosed but never heard of getting moosed.....lol.

I know some people that have tried those whistler thingys for moose. I don't know that they work or not. My area has no deer so they are not a road kill issue. But about 300 moose get hit on the Sterling Highway every year. It's alot like hitting a brick wall, that caves in on top of you. SOmething you don't want to do. And ocassionally a bear gets hit on the road. Usually they run off tho.

According to todays Anchorage Daily News, last winter over 600 moose were killed on the road. And a large number were killed in Anchorage. Personally, I saw one crossing the road at Dimond High School this morning. Because it wasn't a tourist road, everybody just let it cross and then moved on. If it was June 1st, and on C Street, say, we would have had a traffic jam from people stopping to take pics.

I'll admit that the idea of being chewed on by a bear doesn't hold much attraction (I've seen firsthand what that looks like), but I'd bet that for the average resident of southcentral AK moose are the bigger danger.

Those things are just so tall they come right up over the hood and through the windshield. When I was working at Lifeguard I only went to one major bear mauling, but I can remember maybe a dozen serious moose-related accidents.

On the other hand, that bear is gonna be eating on the remains of that moose carcass for days. I'd bet the folks from Soldotna that posted that video are keeping the dogs inside for a while yet.
