How soon should we reserve a spot on the bus to the visitor center. We will be near Denali NP in mid June and are wondering if I should go ahead and reserve our spots or wait until we get there? Thanks.

I'd say the sooner the better. Most of the passengers purchase that as part of a cruise/tour package months in advance.

The cruise tours normally book the Natural History Tour and the Tundra Wilderness Tour. If by the visitor center you mean the Eielson Visitor Center at mile 66, your best bet is to book the shuttle bus and not one of the tours. Much cheaper and they don't book up as fast as the other tours. We booked the shuttle a month in advance last year and had no problem.

The earlier you depart the park entrance the better as your chance of seeing wildlife is greater in the morning.

Play it by ear. Don't book and schedule your time. Chances are you will ahve no problem catching a bus into the park. Wait for nice weather if at all possible. I know we aren't supposed to advertise on this blog and I am not really advertising I am just offering some advice, the last time I went to the park we stayed at Denali Cabins down on the Nenana River and they were perfect. If I were a tourist I would want to know this so I am just offering it as a suggestion. Also if you feel young enough go on a Nenana River Raft Trip through the canyon it is a hoot. Take your time and smell the flowers of Alaska. The biggest mistake people make when visiting Alaska is trying to see too much in too little time. Pick one or two places, spend time there and plan on coming back to visit more. Or better yet consider moving here. That's right fellow Alaskans, I suggest they move here. As did most of you. Let's share our state and welcome people like our parents raised us to do.

Except for the moving here part, good post seldoviadad.

If you have the flexibility and are spending the night, go on Friday. The hotels are less busy then due to the cruise ship schedules and you may get yourself a better rate.

We are staying for 3 nights just outside of the park. We do plan on the shuttle bus, not the tour. We also plan on doing some hiking in and around the area of the park.

It depends on what sort of trip you're planning. If a tight schedule is a necessity, then booking the bus well in advance can't hurt. I wouldn't recommend that sort of trip to Denali though. Many have been disappointed by fickle weather and rigid schedules there. If all else fails and you can't get on the shuttle (which is unlikely), drive out the Denali Hwy from Cantwell 30 miles to Susitna River Crossing and great undeveloped hiking in the Clearwater Mountains.
