I was reading some of your gun laws and found that convicted felons can legally own a gun there if it has been 10 yrs since there conviction, seemed like thay can even become police officers , so my question is this being as there are federal laws in place to prevent felons from carrying firearms how can this be ? can some one please explain this to me.

The first question is where did you read this? And can you post a link?

It's a little more complex than that. It isn't ten years since the conviction but rather ten years since an unconditional discharge, which means that all parole/probation and whatever has been satisfied. That statute is specific to weapons capable of being concealed, and if the crime was against a person rather than property, it doesn't apply.

Don't know about the police officer thing but it seems to have become an extremely competitive field these days so I think it would be very unlikely for a convicted felon to have much of a chance.

States can have laws that are less restrictive than federal laws. The federal law would still block the felon from owning a gun legally. Of course not all guns are "firearms" under federal law, so, the state law would regulate a felon having a pre-1899 cartridge or a cap and ball/flintlock/matchlock handgun. Some states don't have any restrictions on felons leaving only federal laws (Vermont is one).

Yes, under federal law that would be the case.

One thing to keep in mind is that the State Troopers are not there to enforce federal laws. They are there to enforce Alaska state laws.
