Of course we don't know exactly where we would be yet, but I guessing we would look for a house in a semi-rural area with approximate square footage of 2,000. What are the average winter heating costs? I am guessing you don't need AC in the summer? Electricity? Our electrical bill in FL averages around $300 a month in the summer and we have a LONG summer. Taxes?
Lastly, I have no idea of the housing market up there. Would it be difficult to find a house rental in a semi rural (but decent) area? We're not really subdivision people..we live in a rural area of FL now and like big lots where you are not on top of your neighbors. Our property is 2 acres. Would not want to live more than 15-20 miles out of Albany though. We may look into that technical school in Albany for my who wants a culinary program. We need good access to the medical facilities and also a good school district for my other son with special needs.
Property and school taxes vary depending upon the town or county you live in. We are on 3.7 acres, in ground pool, 2100 sq ft house, deck, screened in porch, 20x22 workshop. Our school and property taxes are $8K/year but that is in Saratoga County. There are periods in the summer you will need AC; heating costs during a cold winter average $300/month;electricity $150-175/month. Housing is reasonable, especially now. Without a more definite area, it is hard to give more exact information. Suggest you peruse the Times-Union newspaper, and on line databases, which should give you more information on taxes.
