Those are great suggestions, definitely looking forward to visiting the area soon. It's great to see all of the outside activities that are available around that area and within a short drive. We are planning to visit the first or second week in October. Is that a good time to see the leaves in full fall colors?

That is a great time to go. It depends on what the summer and early fall have been like, but if you go during that time period, you will see some color. It may be at higher or lower elevation or more north or more south - again, depending on the earlier weather - but you will definitely see some color.

Another quick question? How rural is Plattsburgh and the surrounding area? For instance, abundance of stores, restaurants, etc. Just curious as to what to expect. Thanks again!

It's a small city of about 20,000 in a county of about 82,000 and there is a mall and other shopping. Champlain Centre

Thank you for the links. After looking at them, I think that Plattsburgh may not be exactly the quaint type town we are looking for. I will look at Lake Placid again and some of the others mentioned earlier as well. Thanks again.
