It has been many years since I left Albany NY, and NY in general to join the service, wound up settling in WA state, now, contemplating a possible, though not for sure, move to somewhere in Warren County NY, to buy a home on some land. I am not 100 percent sure though at this point. But figured maybe folks can chime in, and help me decide or not to choose to headback to NY state. I am a service connected veteran so I would qualify for 50 percent off my property taxes, plus another 15 percent on top of that, in NY state, then also there is the star exemption, ....so all in all,as long as the property taxes are not really much higher then say 3k or so, then with my exemptions, I would not pay much at all in the end, when it comes to property taxes. I like Warren County and would notconsider many other places in upstate NY, and would have to drive to the VA in Albany once a month.

I am concerned though, about these things:

Can I find a home on some acreage for under 240k? with property taxesanywhere in Warren County around 3k or less?

How high are the heating costs in the winter roughly? Are the homes all on oil heat like in Maine?

How high are the electricity rates in upstate NY? Are they brutal? I have achart showing NY state has having one of the highest electricity rates in the USA.

How is the cost of comprehensive car insurance in upstate NY? Is it real high there?

How is the cost of homeowners insurance? High? Low?

Is the snow and cold as rough and as long as say somewhere like Buffalo? Iremember Albany getting a lot of snow 30 years ago when I lived there.

Does NY have an excise tax (personal property tax on cars and etc.), yearly, and are they high?

Does NY have a yearly car emissions and inspection test requirement in order to get your tags every year?

Sorry about the length of this thread, as I also have other cheaper places I can retire to, in other states across the USA, and upstate NY, Warren county is one of them on my list. So with more knowledge I can say yay or nay to returning to NY state, with the help of folks. Thanks

I'll just answer that there isn't a personal property tax on anything, including cars.

House with acreage under 240? Yes. Taxes around 3k? Probably not, though your disabled vet status might help. Heat can be oil, propane, electric or wood. A good wood or pellet stove can save a lot. Homeowner insurance is reasonable. You have to look around. We bought our property in Washington Co. a couple years ago and will move there permanently next year. Lovely area.

Perhaps something like these homes may work: 477 WEST MOUNTAIN RD, Queensbury, NY 12803

110 HORSESHOE POND RD, Schroon, NY 12870

330 GARNET LAKE RD, Warrensburg, NY 12885

24 TEE HILL RD, Queensbury, NY 12804

92 PINE LA, Schroon, NY 12870

More here: Property Search Results

Car inspections are yearly and cost $21.

I'm pretty sure NY is one of the lower rate states for car insurance. I pay about 1,200 a year for full comprehensive coverage.

I would say for a roughly 2100 sq ft. home that has decent insulation it would run on average between 150-250 per month for electric and gas combined. Colder months could be around 250 and fall and spring months it could be under 200.

Is that oil heat or propane gas? I don't think NY has natural gas lines..
