My fiance accepted a job in Saratoga Springs and we are trying to find somewhere somewhat affordable to live near Saratoga Springs (40 miles maximum any direction). From what I can gather, there is a horse racing track in town and its relatively expensive to live right there. We are from the Chicago suburbs...but fairly far out (about 35 miles), so we are used to suburban living and somewhat affluent suburban living. We do not want to live in a sketchy area, but at the same time are not wanting to spent more than $1,000 a month on rent and utilities. I have family about two hours South near Wurtsboro and family in Rochester, but they are not super familiar with the area and could not give me any information. Any help would be much appreciated.
There are not many sketchy areas in Saratoga. It has changed a lot over the last 10 years and a ton of development has been going on. Unfortunately most of the new housing is pricey and the older places are not getting any cheaper. If you are looking for a more "cultured" experience or nightlife there really isn't anything comparable to Saratoga in this area.
Check out Saratoga Lake, sometimes rentals pop up there that aren't too expensive. It is nice little lake and a great area for biking and kayaking only 10-15 minutes from downtown.
Other areas within ~30 minutes by car worth considering: Glens Falls, Ballston Spa, Clifton Park, Malta, Greenfield, Gansvoort, Wilton.
The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce (link below) has information on all the areas in our county and other relevant information, there is a "where to live section" that might be helpful... check it out!
