Hubbie and I are nearing retirement and we currently live in Otsego Cty and our house is for sale.

Altho Hubbie wants to work for at least another 5-10 yrs, we want to start downsizing and want a house in an area with restaurants, and things to do, and not run down.

As ppl will remember, I have posted many times about moving out of state. We considered moving out of state, both west and south, but west is very expensive, and south is well, down south. We don't think we can handle the political or cultural climate down there. Plus medical care is VERY bad in the south/ Florida. Plus Florida is so overcrowded and expensive. So we are thinking of staying in NY.

We want to live in an area within a 40-45 mile radius of Albany. We want this to possibly be the last house we will buy, since moving will be harder as we get older. We are tired of living in the sticks: there is nothing really around the Sharon Springs area where we live now (we are 1 mile into Otsego Cty).

All our doctors and dentist are in Saratoga Springs and we love that hospital, which we still use even tho it is a 2- 21/2 hr trip for us. However SS is very expensive to live in. Anyone live there? Is SS worth the $$$ to live there? How about the surrounding areas?

Since Hubbie will still be working, we would even consider Albany Cty. We don't really know Albany Cty or even Albany for that matter. Hubbie goes to work in the Corning Tower and we go to Honest Weight and that's it. Is there anything to be said for Albany?

Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know why everyone up north assumes communities in the south are all ultra conservative religious zealots that would be as bad as us assuming you are all radical liberals who support any movement regardless of how left of center it is.
Florida is crowded because most in your neck of the wood would rather live there than upstate NY...

That said have you considered Glens Falls area or perhaps one of the smaller towns outside of Saratoga Springs? You have negative views on most locations, what does look good to you?

Would you consider a walkable city neighborhood like Pine Hills or Helderberg? You could connect with the neighborhood association for both as well. http://pinehillsna.org

I don't really think you'd want to live in the Delaware Ave neighborhood of Albany. Check out the Helderberg and New Scotland neighborhoods. New Scotland Avenue has bars, restaurants, things to do. Very close to Washington Park which is also near Lark St.

OP, if you have time, this event coming up may give an idea of if you may like the neighborhood or not: Home

Some things in the neighborhood: New World Bistro Bar

Cardona's Market

https://ebalbany.com

La Empanada Llama - Home

https://www.facebook.com/delawaresupply/

https://www.landmarktheatres.com/alb...rum-8-theatres

https://www.albanypubliclibrary.org/locations/delaware/

It is also a straight shot to Washington Park and Lark Street. https://www.cdta.org/schedules-route-detail?route_id=18

Whitehall is a nice, adjacent residential that allows for access to the neighborhood and the others mentioned. Census Tract 001902 in Albany County, New York
Census Block Group 001801-3 in Albany County, New York
