Pending sales, a measure of contracts signed, increased 23% in August compared to a year ago in the Multiple Listing Service operated by the Greater Capital Association of Realtors, according to preliminary data released Friday.

The median sale price rose 11% to $238,500 and the average increased 19%, to $292,581."
