I've never been in NM, but I like checking out places on Google Earth. I noticed a huge, mostly vacant, grid system NW of Albuquerque and I was wondering if anyone had the history of it. I'm interested as to why something so large has been built prior to the demand. Of course, the google earth picture could just be from a time right after it had been built but not yet developed...

Thanks!

Why don't you find this "massive vacant grid system" on Google Maps and then give us the URL?

For example this is rio rancho - Google Maps is undeveloped land with dirt roads....

Or are you talking about this? Cliffs at the end of Rainbow Blvd

Well I guess I'm referring to your link with the dirt roads. It just seems like a very organized grid and I was wondering what its purpose was. Is it a precursor to development or what? I see the occasional structure there.. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie...32093&t=h&z=14

BTW, I wasn't trying to be rude, only curious. It reminded me of this in hawaii hove hawaii - Google Maps

Basically no purpose right now. Much of that is privately owned land that was sold in the 60's and 70's. No water. Not Electricity. Etc... There are a few people living there "off the grid". It was platted in the 60's and pretty much worthless but people keep buying lots that are for sale.

You weren't rude, just a bit vague. The hove hawaii lines all appear to be asphalt streets.

The brown lines you see are dirt roads in the desert, many plowed out possible 10 or 20 years ago.

Three pictures of the general area.

Looking East, Sandia Mountain about 25 miles away, you can see the West side of of Rio Rancho or Bernallio. The light tan structure is a water tank.

Same basic view from a different location:

Closer in from a different location. This looks like the west side of Enchanted Hills in Rio Rancho.

I could not find the proper pictures, and not sure of the locations...

So it's just private owned land?
And those owners haven't done anything with it... right?

I do not know for sure that it is all private land. AMREP may still own some of it.

For the most part nothing has been done with it. It's desert.

Rich, if you continue west on Southern. Where does that lead to? My cousin took me for a spin in his 4x4, about a mile west of the paved section. The road just kept leading out to the sunset. Was sort of weird and eerie driving on a road to no where. I was also surprised to see a few nice homes out that way.

That first picture is not looking east to Sandia, it's looking north to Redondo Peak in the Jemez, about 40 miles (or more) from Rio Rancho, depending on where you were.

You are correct...

I/we took those almost two years ago. I believe we were in the Rio Rancho area the whole time.
