Does anyone have any recommendations without hesitation for long-term care facilities in Albuquerque for loved ones (either elderly or disabled)? Ones where residents were treated nicely, facilities were first-class, etc. I hear that Albuquerque is a good place to retire, so I am assuming these types of facilities do exist in Albuquerque for the right price. Thanks.
I guess from the lack of responses either people don't have experience with this, or they haven't had "excellent experiences." If you are talking about nursing homes, my limited experience hasn't been good, here or back east. I don't know if ABQ is a good place to retire, but if it is it may be more due to the weather than quality long-term care facilities.
I can only advise to plan ahead and do a lot of legwork visiting places yourself. A place that has a long waiting list is probably better than places that have empty beds now, but many people need to be placed in a hurry (like upon discharge from a hospital) so just have to go wherever there's an empty bed. It sounds like you may have the luxury of time to shop around for a relative.
You work in health care, correct? I hate to be cynical but my experience in for-profit nursing homes has been minimally trained staff, high turnover, understaffing, and instead of a "what can I do for you?" attitude, one of "what can I get away with not doing for you?" Of course the "bottom line" dictates minimum services for maximum billing.
In addition to the various and sundry traditional nursing homes in town, there are also numerous smaller group homes you may want to look into.
If I were you I would consult the social workers in your hospital who plan discharge and work on placement in nursing homes for patients. They generally have a good idea of which places are better than others. But they may have no idea about the small group homes.
I have experience with Manzano del Sol, a non-profit independent living facility with a nursing home attached, run by the Lutherans. I wasn't too impressed with it until I later tried a for-profit nursing home that had a high rating online. Good God, that place was a snake pit! It made me see Manzano del Sol in a different light. Night and day.
I have a very attenuated connection with people who live in La Vida Llena (my cousin's husband's parents), we've gone there a few holidays to have dinner with them. They are well traveled, worldy people who consider themselves"foodies," and they seem satisfied with the facility. They are still in the mostly independent apartment living stage, though. Wish I could provide more info.
