I hear ya nmguy, we get these big old narly crickets in our house. They come out every May and last for about a month and then seem to disappear. I always have the hubby get out the bug spray and exterminate. But I like your thinking, maybe after a couple of glasses of cabernet I'll be a happy observer.
I laughed out loud about the jackrabbit attack, well maybe not funny for the person being attacked, but just the vision of it made me laugh out loud.
. . . what about those little lizards. I have seen them in NM, . . . I think I would freak if there was one in my house. I asked my hubby how would you get one of those out of your house, it's not like you can set a mouse trap out. . . I would like to settle down and enjoy NM.
Lizards are skittish and will run from you. They also help to control the insect population and do not damage anything. I would prefer to see lizards in my yard than most insects--for many reasons.
Wait until the noisy crickets chirp at night and you'll want lizards to eat them. Also, when you see centipedes, millipedes, and other such pests--you may start to like those lizards.
After living in the desert for MANY years, I have had one and only one, tiny little baby lizard get into my house--because I had the double doors open for hours. I just slowly walked behind it and the frightened baby quickly skittered out through the open doors. They rarely get into houses. If you want to make sure that they stay out of your house, keep your doors shut and keep an INDOOR cat.
Cats are natural predators, which the lizards will avoid.
P.S. I would love to trade lizards for the adorable bunnies that eat holes in my lawn.
Great pic of the roadrunner dining on the lizard, Rich.
The only problem with roadrunners eating lizards is that lizards eat crickets.
When we had an uninvited cricket once that was chirping away to his heart's content in our bedroom at around midnight, two lizards stationed themselves on the window screen, trying to get in and munch on the musical merrymaker.
If I had to have one in the house, let it be a laid-back lizard rather than than a cacophonic cricket.
Although this guy's pretty big as lizards go, he's harmless.
Humm... Big? This guy is Grande:
