We've just installed a wildlife surveillance camera over here in Sandia Park, and after about a week of capturing our cars, dogs, etc., we finally have our first official wildlife shot: a wily coyote!
At the bottom of the frame you'll see that he cruised by last night about 11:30 pm - the camera automatically records the date, time, temperature and even the moon phase of each photo. (Love it, I'm such a geek.)
But because the nighttime shots are infrared, the detail isn't great. I've edited the photo to brighten & sharpen it, but I still can't tell what he's got in his mouth - and not sure I want to know anyway - it looks like a femur!

I thought it was stealing the paper (we had one on Florida that would do that)
Maggie, that photo URL does not work on this site, I tried to fix it..... It might be one of those anti piracy sites you are using... Or something else...
It does look like a rolled-up newspaper, doesn't it? But in another photo - it wasn't as good so I didn't post it - it really looks like a bone, and I do mean a femur, of some fairly large animal, yikes.
We are thrilled with the camera, and depending on what features you want, you can get them between $50 and $100. I'm considering getting another cheaper one to stake out another area of the property ... we also looked at outdoor security cameras, there's one that you can see what it sees through a web browser or smart phone any time you like, that'll even send you emails when it's triggered. How cool is that?
As for the photo link, well I dunno, I couldn't make it work either. Because the Insert Image button asks for a web link rather than uploading from disk, I uploaded the picture to my Blogspot blog. Not sure what magic occurs there, but the link is weird.
I have heard from my neighbor that there are coyotes who run through her land as well as our land and the empty acre beyond. It would be very interesting to get a camera out in the back "yard" to see who passes through at night. Excellent idea!
Wow, that coyote most definitely looks well fed. We had halogen motion detector lights installed in the side and back of our E. Mtn. house thinking about fine looking specimans such as this coyote. We don't have a fence up yet and need to walk our 11 year old labrador out to the back sometimes. We also put lights on him so we know exactly where he is and we are a few feet away. Our neighbor's new husband let my neighbor's cat out one evening (never to be seen again). I wonder how coyotes respond to dogs.
