If you were walking from an area just west of the UNM campus to Old Town, would you take Lomas, Mountain or Central? Which is most pedestrian friendly and/or enjoyable (or is this not an area worth walking)? It's only around 2 miles, right?

I would take Central. From the Frontier to the Plaza in Oldtown is about 3 miles. I have not done it lately...

What Poncho said. Central would be the most interesting and direct route. It takes about an hour or so. If you get tired, you can hop on the bus.

Definitely don't do Lomas (not pedestrian friendly). Mountain is mostly residential, and Central would be the most interesting.

I agree that you should go with Central, which, while not really pedestrian friendly all the way through, is still an improvement over Lomas. I don't think I've done this walk, but I have walked from UNM to downtown. (Actually, I think the farthest I've walked here has been from about Central and Louisiana to 8th & Central.)

Thanks for the advice, everyone. We did go to Old Town, which was very nice, but we did not end up walking. By the time we arrived here we were SO HUNGRY that I probably would have butchered and eaten the first person we saw on the street, so we drove. We ate at La Crepe Michel, which was fantastic.

I used to do this all the time and Central is the most interesting.

However, taking Gold or Silver is also very nice. You can only "punch"
through the freeway on Lead, Central, MLK, Lomas, but you can walk
a block or so and resume your walk and see new stuff on the other streets.
Note that you can only "punch through the RR tracks on those same streets.

Taking these streets gets you all the way to the Country Club area.
From there, you can go North to Old Town.

Also, Lomas is pretty pedestrian-friendly from 4th street to where it merges with Central.

Streets North of Lomas such as Orchard, Marble, Granite and Mountain are also interesting.

I've even done the walk on Iron, but it requires a lot of do-si-do's since it isn't continuous.

Don't overlook Tingley as a possible alternate. It links with Central just West of Old Town.
