If price isn't an issue, I'd say the Village of Los Ranchos or Corrales.

Far Northeast Heights/High Desert area would be my favorite. Up around Tramway and Academy, I love that neighborhood, the style of the homes and easy access to foothill/mountain trails.

Corrales and Los Ranchos are beautiful. They feel country but not far from city. Also I like the views of Sandia from over there vs. closer to the mountain.

Price is always an issue. If you have millions, far northeast heights, tucked up in the Sandias, or in the gated areas around Tanoan CC. Plenty of multi-million dollar homes there. Plenty of estate homes along the Rio as well in Los Ranchos or around Corralas.

More realistically, if you are upper middle-class and are in the 250-400 thousand range, there are really nice neighborhood in many areas of the city. Mostly in the far NE or NW area. I live in a gated area of Ventana Ranch and homes here are on the 200-350 range. Typical upper middle class, but not rich. 20-25 minute drive to the center of town, but 10-15 to major shopping on the west side. Yet, still far enough out to be safe and still here the coyotes howling in the desert at night. There are similar neighborhood peppered throughout the city.

Bottom line, no matter what your budget (and like everyone, you must have one), there are very nice, and safe places.
