In a rather bizarre conversation today, I was accused of being "racist" in suggesting that a young man with a distinctly Hispanic heritage was the friend of someone who considers himself more (proudly) Anglo. What a waste of time that was!
I believe that it is the warmth and color of the Spanish, Mexican and Native American cultures that is the secret to making Albuquerque such an interesting place to live. Coming from New York City I found these colorful cultural assets a powerful and welcoming lure. The blending of these rich cultural veins, albeit imperfect, add spice and depth to Albuquerque, making for a wonderful local cuisine, and a warm people with a hospitality that goes beyond the traditional American norm. If you want to experience the southwest without the influence of these three cultures, live in Phoenix, AZ (as I did for three years). The warmth and earthiness that makes Albuquerque so special is just not there.
It is a shame that some consider their own backgrounds superior, and thereby miss the gems that other cultures contribute to the richness of our daily lives. I say pass the posole please, and spare me your negative attitudes!
