You're bound to be just fine if you can avoid going south of Menaul or west of Wyoming. It's a tall order, but three times I've done this last, I've been bitten by the high crime circumstances of this city. This is why I stopped working downtown. This isn't like other large cities with a lot of crime because other large cities with a lot of crime usually have big police forces that help balance things out!

If you do this then you miss out on Old Town, the BioPark (award-winning Zoo and Botanical Garden), cultural and sporting events, museums, Nob Hill, UNM, Bosque, ... in short, not a very interesting life.
They have a beautiful zoo located in downtown Albuquerque that your young son might enjoy. Cost is around $14/adult and $6 child. Well worth the money. Old Town Albuquerque is very nice as well. It's unique and free. Both of these are close to each other. If you are driving I would park in the zoo's parking lot (free) and inside of Old Town rather than on a street outside (free as well but get there early for the best spots) I never had any issues with anyone breaking into my car while using those areas to park in. Keep your car locked and don't leave anything within sight that thieves might want. (the same applies to any hotel/motel parking lot)

Children 2 and under are free! (I'm a great-grandfather...)
The Zoo is great!

The OP should be here tomorrow. Being from New Jersey myself, she will have the initial shock of big blue skies, the Sandias, and poverty, and panhandling she will not have seen being from the Garden State. The two places could not be more different in terms of physical geography or demographics.
