I have an 04' Outback with a po420 check engine light (catalytic converter performing below threshold). My question is: what does a Bernallilo emissions test involves? Does it only check the onboard diagnostics or will they do a tailpipe exhaust test as well? I've already dumped thousands of dollars into replacing the brakes, shocks, struts, and other things on this car and to replace the cat (very costly) almost doesn't make sense as the amount I would have put into repairs is more than the car is worth. I know you can still pass emissions by clearing the codes beforehand, but if they do a tail pipe test I'm screwed.
See the second page of this - http://www.cabq.gov/airquality/docum...2019-final.pdf - for specifics on the ABQ emissions test. I believe the cat check is just a visual inspection, but you can call the number listed on the first page and ask for more specifics. No tailpipe test is performed on vehicles that get the OBD test.
But you can't just clear the diagnostic trouble codes before the OBD test, since the readiness codes also need to be set at the time of the test.
