Hi, all! Here's the sitch; I just graduated Physician Assistant school in KY, and will be moving to NM for a job in neurosurgery!! I grew up in Denver and went to college in Durango, CO, so I'm ecstatic to return to the mountain west!

My issue is that I have 3 dogs. I am looking for a nice place to live that will allow me to have all 3 of my babies with me. None of them are on typical "restricted breeds lists"; they are a Jack Russell Terrier, an Australian Shepherd Mix, and a Corgi Mix.

We are looking for a 2-3 bed, 2 bath.

Any ideas??

Thanks so much, future neighbors!

Wow, kudos for your hard work coming to fruition! I also love the high desert and mountain landscape so I understand your excitement and I'm happy for you! I just got back to this landscape from NOVA/DC this past winter. Now my reply gets a bit more interesting because we are travel trailer full time livers with two dogs and two cats. Pet restrictions is one reason we chose this lifestyle

Back to your question, it is unfortunately standard for nearly all apartment complexes to limit pets to no more than 2 across the country. They might make an allowance for your third if you ask, but they generally charge additional fees anyways, which I dont personally care for. If that's not a concern for you, then awesome. It doesn't hurt to ask if they can make an exception for the lease agreement if you find a place that you like. Not being from ABQ, I dont have specific recommendations.

One suggestion is you could rent from a private owner that will allow three. Trulia . c om comes to mind for rental searches, or you could support a local Realtor that can help search property listings to meet your needs.

An out of the box idea could be checking with the nearby RV parks (or consider getting your own rv if you like to camp or travel), but you can check the rv parks for rentals of either rv units or cabins for a unique living situation while you find what you're looking for. Best wishes!

What does your price range look like? I agree with b2cruise that an apartment complex is going to be challenging with 3 dogs, but there are plenty of houses for rent all over the metro area that would meet your needs. Depending on where you're working, the neighborhoods around UNM would be a good place to start: University Heights, Silver Hill, Nob Hill, Southeast Heights, Victory Hills, North Campus, etc.

If she can pay rent, there are many landlords who may be willing to make some exceptions for her dogs. Some 42% of New Mexico renters are at risk of eviction.
