How do you like it out there compared to NoVA?

I'm not a fan of the area.

Oh no. Are my visions of the perfect place to live about to be shattered?

Truly no comparison. It's not just the obvious and profound physical and
climatic differences, it's also the general mindset and lifestyles (note the plural).

I lived here back in 70-72 so deciding to jump back into the Southwest was
not really a difficult decision. It works well for Debbie and I, but as many people
will tell you, it doesn't work for everyone.

I live on the very Western fringe of the city because it maximizes the western
desert atmosphere while still being very convenient (at least in non-rush hour)
to just about every part of the city. We ate Vietnamese last night with a
bunch of people in Southeast, my wife has her hair done in Northeast, we
attend Olde Geezer extension classes at UNM, we have lunch in old town,
I've got birds out the ying-yang at our feeder, road runners have a highway
through our yard, rabbits love the weeds along the wall and one or more
coyotes reduced the rabbit population significantly a couple days ago.

When I was a kid Fairfax County was still largely open land, there were foxes
and other critters and there was room to breathe. That's all gone back there
but it is still an essential part of HERE.

Gotta run, Debbie just brought home Chinese take-out..

The cost of living and property in NM is much lower than D.C. it is just that simple.

No, no, no.

Its just about a dislike of "suburban" life, which Rio Rancho is.

Many of the common draws to ABQ are obviously the same as what you'd find in attached Rio Rancho - gorgeous mountain views, spectacular year-round weather, dry air, blue skies, 300+ days annually of sunshine, etc.

ABQ is just the "bigger city" and henceforth in many areas urban. RR is the classic newer developed suburb that you get in most any big city area.

I lived in ABQ (on the semi-urban NE Heights side) from 03-mid 07 and loved it. Ideally, I guess I prefer that over Rio Rancho. However, I would live in Rio Rancho in a damn second too.

Many people on this forum tend to either love ABQ / hate RR (preference for urban and dislike for suburban) or vice/versa (love suburban). Me? I am a bit of an aberration...I could easily be thrilled with both.

Rio Rancho is a VERY attractive area to live in if you are looking for suburban life (that is still a very relatively close drive to most anywhere in the bigger city...especially compared to the traffic-laden ball of hades in NoVa / DC area).

Not at all. I'm sure you would enjoy the area very much.

You're Marine may become frustrated with the commute every now and then, but that's probably about it.

ABQ is where I grew-up, RR was always... over there. It's simply not ABQ at all. They share many vistas, but culturally are very different (cuturally I'm referring to Downtown, Old Town, Bosque areas, etc.).
