It all depends on where you compare it to. I spent the majority of my life in a smallish town in England and was obviously spoiled with waiting times being mostly around 30 minutes and no fee's whatsoever.

I took my wife to UNM ER about 18 months ago, we arrived at 11pm (Saturday night) and saw the Dr at around 6am. I took my son to UNM Pediatrics ER about 6 months ago around 8pm (Sunday evening) and we were seen in around an hour, So I guess it varies a lot with the day and time of the week.

The ER can be grim, although we have good luck with urgent care, especially the Presbyterian UC in Rio Rancho.

I second Presbyterian urgent care. I think if you have access to it, it is always a better bet than the ER.

I have had mixed results. It appears emergencies are taken care of pretty well. Sometimes routine appointments can take months. These threads may help:

you would be better off depending on Pres urgent care like suggested. The emergancy rooms are great for true emergancies, but for routine care they are not great. The wait will be long, for obvious reasons. As for pain clinics, that I can not answer..

Emergency room visits cost a lot more than Urgent Care, too. Unfortunately, I live a 5 minute walk from the ER and a 20 minute drive from the nearest UC clinic.
