I'm not sure what these bugs are but they are pestering my horses! Is anyone familiar with them? Can I expect them all summer, or is this a spring-time thing? They are light colored and out during the day, in the sun.

No-see-ums are biting midges that belong to the fly family Ceratopogonidae. They breed in very damp soil and they are active this time of year. Thanks!
don't know what they are but we have gnats here in our house. We have them every year from about mid May to Sept, sometimes they are worse than other times, regardless they drive me nuts!!!!!
This is my first experience with biting gnats. Argh. Gnats I have known in OH and PA were harmless things. And in CO there was very few insects at all! I find them strange because I don't live in the greenbelt and everything is so dry. Hopefully they will clear out soon!
