What is a good basic no-frills Red Wine to keep at home for movie-and-a-date nights? I may pair it up with some cheese/nuts once in a while. Something in the $10-$20 range?

Ladies, what do you suggest?

Hopefully it's a wine I can easily find at a grocery store. Thank you.

I have a different suggestion.

Instead of asking here, and then trying to find whatever some strangers suggest, without knowing what their preferences are, go to a wine store or a liquor store or a supermarket with a wine department and a wine manager on board, and ask them for a recommendation from what they have on hand. If they're like my supermarket they may even have a couple of wines for you to taste, and they will absolutely understand your request.

And wine stores, that's what they exist for, to help you select something you will like.

Well do you want Merlot, Cab, Merlot/Cab blend?? You want light or dry? Many questions to answer. I suggest what OpenD said. Find a wine store and ask when they are having wine tastings and go. Good way to educate yourself and try different stuff out.

Or you can always just pick up a bottle of each..Robert Mondavi is pretty popular and in that price range..

I hate White Zin, and I've been a lady for quite sometime. And he asked for red.

I absolutely second that. They will take your inputs and hopefully provide you with a number of good suggestions within your price range.

As mentioned above, have an idea what you like before asking... dry, semi-dry, slightly sweet, sweet? Spicy, oaked, tannic? That way they can steer you where you want to go.

for us, it is a good Merlot, shiriz or Pior Noir ( spelling doesn't count) we have recently fallen for Malbec, but any good moderately priced red works. the price should be between 7 and 10 dollars a bottle.
