Hello fellow Yanks. So I am headed to England (Cambridge mostly but also London) for about a week and was looking to purchase some good whiskies that you can't find in the states. I was thinking Blue Hanger and Green Spot to start. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to keep it under about $50 or so, what's that, about 30 pounds? I'm more interested in good values but not cheap quality stuff or real high end either. Thanks mates.

You could try some of the single malts, we like Caol Ila (pronounced Ca'isla) which is a peaty Islay single malt. Try a good Wine merchant and ask what they would recommend.
Something that is not available in the US? In the UK I think that would mostly be blends, not single malts, which are very well sold in the US. Caol Ila, for example... a very fine tipple from the Islay region... is available in my corner liquor store.
When in Scotland I look for "Distiller's Reserve" bottlings, which are available in such limited quantities that they don't get into the mass market. Another is "cask strength," typically around 120 proof, which needs to be cut with water to be sippable. But ask a liquor merchant there for their recommendations. They usually have a good handle on the situation.
