I say ToriaT (see post #3) and those who got the same 'cure' have us all beat.

What what the stuff they put on your knee when you fell and scraped it?

It stung like anything. Iodine? Mecurachrome? (don't know how to spell that.)

There was also SOAP if you said a dirty word.

And there was lemon in hot water and to bed under a load of quilts if you had a cold. Sweat it out. In the morning you were sweaty but better.

Ginger ale. My grandmother was a great believer of ginger ale as a cure for anything. To this day, the smell of ginger ale makes me nauseous.

Mentholatum. Ugh. My Grandmother bought this stuff by batches...and rubbed it all over me when I was sick. Or had a cold. Goopey, stinky....gross!

Mercurochrome. I don't remember it being that bad.

I LOVES me some ginger ale (diet, these days.) I'd've hated Mentholatum.

My grandmother's suggestion for any malady? "Go sit on the toilet."

For soar throat & sinus my mom would heat a real lemon directly on the stove, squeeze out the juice & sprinkle some black pepper. I hated the taste but it never failed.

Castor oil, cod liver oil...YUCK! Here's 2. 1. Warm salt in a frying pan, put it in a clean sock, lay your ear on the sock to draw out infection in your inner ear. 2. Throw some vinegar in a pot of boiling water, take pot off stove, take a towel drape over your head and inhale the vapors to drain your sinuses. I would rather eat a spoonful of horseradish...does the same thing and I don't suffer burns..LOL! Although, it does clean out your pores!

I really find all of this quite interesting. Anyone else have a different 'cure' to talk about?
Anyone remember getting any of these 'cures' as a kid?

Exclamation for the flu...

my stepdad would heat a cup of lemonade and dose it w/Vodka, make us down it and then wrap us in a blanket to make us 'sweat it out'...we were up hand about the next day...flu gone. Another story, he had a son w/polio. He took him to the beach every day for months and buried his body in the hot sand for a few hours each day and cured his polio...fact!
