Hmmm... I remember my mom doing that from time to time, but I think she thought it got rid of crows feet.
A Friend and colleague tells me that, in her native Haiti, kids get a big dose of castor oil the night before the first day of school, just as a general tonic. I'd say that the majority of folk cures involved purgatives of one sort of another. That can't have been pleasant.
Paregoric for a stomache ache. I remember it tasting bad, like whiskey, but I always chose that when given the choice between that and Pepto Bismol. Easier to get a half teaspoon of that down than a tablespoon of Pepto Bismol.....yuck.
Honey, whiskey and vinegar for a sore throat.
And yes, the Vicks, rubbed all over my chest when I had a cold.
