I've taken several and never could tell a difference. I've heard that Garden of Life is a good brand but it tends to be expensive. I've also heard that the ones you get from the refrigerated case have more "stuff" in them. The most interesting thing that I've heard though is that fermented foods are the best way to get probiotics, but it can be difficult. For instance, sauerkraut is a health food it turns out, or it would be if you could get the unpasteurized stuff but almost everything that hits the market is pasteurized. Even Bubbies, which is a premium product, so you just about have to make your own and this is about like making cole slaw from scratch. Basically you shred a cabbage, put it in a bowl with a couple of tablespoons of unprocessed salt and a liter of filtered water. You tamp it down hard to soften it and then pack it into a crock or something and fill up a gallon ziplock with water to keep on top to seal out the air and hold the veggies in the brine and it will make your house smell gawdawful but keep at it and in 10 days you'll have a super probiotic that supposedly has more organisms than any pill. There, that was probably TMI but I'm getting ready to work up a batch tomorrow. BTW, it's delicious.

Here's a link: Naturally Cultured and Fermented Vegetables, Fruits and Condiments | Fermentation Articles, How-to Videos & Recipes

It's a commercial site but has articles and videos and you don't really need all that stuff unless you get hooked and want to have the best equipment. For mine I just use the inside of a crockpot.

I would look at Swanson Vitamins, they have good products there at very reasonable prices. They have free shipping right now too. And ya can't beat that.

I've used this one, this is a good price on it now. Their own products are as good as any out there I think.

A registered dietician friend told me the refrigerated ones are by far the best, so any that are ordered online will have much of the good diminished. I would buy from a health food store right before you can take them home to refregerate.

This friend would know as she's the person who figures out what to feed hospital patients including people in coma's through feeding tubes etc.

There is a lot of buzz about Dr. Ohira's probiotics. I have not used them myself. I use Ultimate Flora (from the health food store), and I am happy with them.

"Greek" Yogurt is ok except if your on antibiotics as it is neutralized in the lower intestines and thereby a weak probiotic.
Doctors will order yogurt believing it's sort of a panacea for their their immune depressed ,antibiotic overloaded patients
leaving them subject to diarrhea (loss of base causing metobolic acidosis), loss of normal gut flora, compromising the immune system ,and causing potential for resistant strains to andd to the cascade of poor care. We like Green Vibrance, Align,Puritan Pride, Dr. Ohhira's to mention a few.

I've tried quite a few. My favorite, though expensive, is Natren Healthy Trinity. Another good one, and less expensive is PB 8. Also, Yakult (Japanese probiotic drink) is really good.
One thing I have found is that probiotics really help my immune system and, at least in my experience, you really can't overdose on probiotics. They help me alot.
