It's long overdue and hopefully other states will follow suit, its in the best interest of public health.
The "choice" that you talk about is the "choice to either homeschool or vaccinate for everything the state says you must vaccinate for. That's not really a choice. Homeschooling is not an option for everyone. I find your comment to be completely off topic for this thread and for the sub forum. The purpose of the thread is to discuss ways to avoid serious complications from measles utilizing nutrition.

Measles May Weaken Immune System for Up to 3 Years, Study Contends

"Prior studies have suggested that measles causes a short-term "immune amnesia" that lasts for weeks or months following infection. By looking across large populations, this study found that the immune suppression caused by measles appears to be deeper and longer lasting than previously thought, the study authors said.

Children's immune systems in England and Wales appeared to be weakened for as long as 28 months following a measles infection, during which time they were at increased risk for death from a viral or bacterial disease, the study reported. In the United States, the effect lasted about 31 months, and in Denmark, about 26 months, the study said.

"These results provide population evidence for a generalized prolonged [roughly two- to three-year] impact of measles infection on subsequent mortality from other infectious diseases," the authors concluded."
This thread is in the Alternative Health forum and is a place for those who are interested in talking about how to avoid serious complications from measles by utilizing nutrition and other alternative health measures rather then vaccines. The info could also be useful for those who do vaccinate for measles and just want more ideas on how to stay healthy if they do catch them anyway.

In the case of measles, "taking good care of one's immune system" would mean preventing it in the first place, since the disease itself produces damage to the immune system that is persistent for two to three years after recovery from the infection.

Vitamin A does not prevent subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a fatal complication of measles. It also will not treat it.

That is the more mainstream or western way and you are more then welcome to stick to that if it's what works for you but for many who subscribe to more alternative types of medicine, vaccinations are not necessarily the best way to maintain optimal health.

Moderator cut: not needed, posts deleted

There are also other ways to help avoid complications from measles like keeping hydrated and eating foods that are naturally anti-viral.

Getting sick with anything is due to being susceptible to it. Vitamin deficiency can cause susceptibility as well as other deficiencies.

Getting all your veggies in is key to health in any situation. Many people believe that you just have to take a vitamin pill but I believe eating raw foods is much better for the body.

Also: Both the CDC and WHO recommend Vitamin A as an effective way to reduce complications.

"Vitamin A supplements have been shown to reduce the number of deaths from measles by 50%." Source

"We conclude that all adults who have measles should be assessed for vitamin A and retinol-binding protein levels and should be considered for vitamin A supplementation, as are children" Source

They also recommend improving vaccine coverage in those specific populations, but you are right about the Vitamin A it is a good adjunct to vaccination

There is no way to do that once you have the measles. The idea that eating some anti-viral foods will treat measles is untrue.

That's a bit of a cherry-pick. Here's the whole thought: "All children in developing countries diagnosed with measles should receive two doses of vitamin A supplements, given 24 hours apart. This treatment restores low vitamin A levels during measles that occur even in well-nourished children and can help prevent eye damage and blindness. Vitamin A supplements have been shown to reduce the number of deaths from measles by 50%."

And they are talking about huge megadoses of Vitamin A:
Measles | For Healthcare Professionals | CDC
"Severe measles cases among children, such as those who are hospitalized, should be treated with vitamin A. Vitamin A should be administered immediately on diagnosis and repeated the next day. The recommended age-specific daily doses are

50,000 IU for infants younger than 6 months of age
100,000 IU for infants 6–11 months of age
200,000 IU for children 12 months of age and older"

The RDA of vitamin A adults is 3000 IU for men and 2300 IU for women. Thus they are talking about doses as great as 100 X the usual adult dose.
Vitamin A (retinol) Dosing - Mayo Clinic

I believe it is generally given IV.

What is your point? The OP is about Vitamin A and measles. Whether in developing countries or not Vitamin A is proven to reduce deaths from measles and having a deficiency makes you more susceptible to complications.

Also, since measles is a virus... anti-viral therapy would be effective.
