I have a sleep combo posted here and what I use with my low dose melatonin is inositol and calms forte' homeopathic tab. My combo gives me 8+ hrs pretty good sleep nightly. Key is taking melatonin about 4 hrs before heading to bed.
I am very disappointed -- and surprised -- to find that my formerly effective 7.5 mg. dose of melatonin isn't helping me sleep all of a sudden. Is it possible to develop a tolerance for this and for it to become less -- or even not -- effective after a while?
I had that happen to me when I was taken 9 mg nightly. It worked for about 2 years, then stopped. I had to switch on and off from that to benadryl for it to work again. The labeling suggests taking it for up to 6 weeks then off for a week. A little while ago I had a break from it for a few months and it now seems to be working nearly every night.
It is difficult for me to get to sleep more than waking up later and then being unable to get back to sleep. However, I found a mix of immediate-release and timed-release melatonin works best for me. Right now I'm taking a 10 mg that is split into 5 mg immediate and 5 mg timed (that seems to be hard to find so I've also got ones that are both all immediate or all timed-release).
And, of course, all brands are not created equal; there's really no regulation of herbals supplements. And I tend to buy the cheapest I can find! I'll have to try it again after taking this LONG break from it; thanks, all.
For those wake ups when one can't get back to sleep and it happens to me sometimes, I have inositol and/or Calms Forte' handy to take and one or the other gets me back to sleep.
I don't buy the cheapest of anything and many herbals are tested by the producers. As best they can test without spending millions.

That happened to me, and on a much lower dose of melatonin. How old are you, and what, exactly, is your sleep problem? Trouble getting to sleep initially? Trouble staying asleep? If you're in perimenopause or menopause, and have trouble getting to sleep when you go to bed, you may need progesterone to get to sleep. Your progesterone declines after 40, and that's what's responsible for preparing the body for sleep and getting you to sleep. But first, check your dinner menus; too many carbs or a sweet desert can cause insulin resistance at that age, which will prevent sleep. Before getting progesterone (available in a low-dose cream over the counter), try adjusting your afternoon and evening diet; no sweet snacks or starchy foods. See if that helps.
Well, I'm menopausal and pretty much my entire diet is carbs and sugars, LOL. However, I take HRT (couldn't stand the 20x/day hot flashes), so that should keep my progesterone levels normal. We do produce less melatonin as we age, so it seems like this should work...
However, I've always had a problem with "turning my brain off" when trying to fall asleep.
I thought my eyes were deceiving me about your entire diet is carbs and sugars. Sounds like you are hyped up on sugars.
