Well... some would say Central America (there's only one America that is sub-divided into three regions: North, Central, and South with every island east of the Central American isthmus included in Central America.)
Believe it or not, millions of people are taught this, especially in Latin America.
Now they can close this.
My understanding is that it's common to consider North and South America as one continent in many Latin American countries. But then they teach that Europe and Asia are separate continents. This strikes me as odd. If the small land connection in Panama is enough to join the Americas into one continent then certainly the much larger land connection (which European geographers invented based on some non-contiguous natural features) between Europe and Asia would be even a greater disqualification for two continents there.
But I agree that we in the U.S. shouldn't appropriate the term "American" to only designate our nationality. The problem is that United Statesian just sounds so stupid.
Geologically, most Eastern Caribbean islands were South American at one point. Hell, Cuba was once attached to the Yucatan Peninsula.
But Trinidad was attached physically and geologically and unified until decades ago. That's the difference. Even today if you look the proximity it's still pretty close.

Trinidad is in the Atlantic ocean, not in the Caribbean and about 12 miles from Venezuela
It was part of Venezuela until about 1800
