Anyone surprised by how many Peruvians of Chinese/part Chinese ancestry there are?
1.3-1.6 million, that's almost twice that of Australia, more than Canada and almost 1/2 that of the United States! The most of any South American country. And Peru only has about 30 million people. They've also had a Chinese and Japanese Peruvian prime minister.
Wiki says many left in the 60s and 70s, maybe because of the economic situation. It's kind of sad to hear. So how long-established is the existing community there? Are they fully integrated, for the most part?
I'm curious if there are any large communities of Asian Hispanics in the US.

Mexico has a very large population of persons with Chinese heritage, as do most of the Latin American countries. The Chinese needed to emigrate from China and the Latin American countries would let them in. If they could not meet the immigration requirements of the USA or Canada, or if they already had family in one of the other countries, then that is where they went.
Havana, Cuba has a Chinatown. At its highest, Asians made up 3% of the population. Unfortunately a lot have left since the revolution. Also, a lot of them are mixed with white or black.
I am pretty sure, like in most countries, the chinese play a special role in the socio-economic strata. They are probably mostly business men, and other white collar workers. The wiki page lists many prominent chinese peruvians.
I am actually more surprised that Brazil does not have more chinese. Macau afterall has lusophone influence, and Brazil during the great exodus years of China was like the rest of the new world, and hungry for laborers.

Me too, one would expect Brazil to have the most number of Chinese, but I guess there was less Africans to work as labourers than in Peru.
Urban Brazil has a very large Japanese-descent population. Japanese Brazilian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . A few years ago, Japan (which has an extreme demographic problem of not enough working-age people to support their elderly population) invited any who wanted, to immigrate back to Japan. Several thousand took them up on the offer, and moved to Japan, but their freewheeling ways, lack of discipline and punctuality, loud partying, and problems learning the language, did not fit in with Japanese culture. So the Japanese government paid many of them to return to Brazil.
China is the most populous country on earth, It does not surprise me at all there would be alot of CHinese in Peru. There are alot of chinese people all over Latin America. San Jose, Costa Rica and Sto.Domingo, Dominican Republic, both have china towns.
In Central America though, there are more Koreans now. Especially in Guatemala. They own all the sweatshops and treat their workers like crap. I don't like to generalize, but i dont know what it is about koreans, they can be real aggresive and mean. Asians in general tend to stick to themselves and be uptight, But I find Chinese and other asians are not as exclusive and/or prejudice as Koreans.
President Alberto Fujimori (of Japanese descent) was the PRESIDENT OF PERU from 1990 until 2000! His daughter ran for President herself two years ago. So no, it does not surprise me that there is a large Asian community in Peru.
I had lunch last weekend in Lima's Chinatown and I have to say I see alot more Asian influence here in Miraflores (district of Lima).
