No, in fact it probably is true that Castro was more ruthless than most. He had to be, because he was the only one running against the grain of embedded capitalist dogma, and virtually the entire established hemisphere was using all its ruthless might to oppose him.
Oh please, Castro did horrible stuff and ran off his rivals before the US ever began to oppose him. His power consolidation in the year after the revolution says it all. I'd even suspect he nudged Che out of the nest so to speak, just nicer than how he pushed out the others.
IMO Castro didn't have the body count because so many fled the country and he was under a little more scrutiny.
Because he was not a puppet installed by or with the approval of the USA and his inhumane acts and atrocities were not committed with the financial and military support of the USA, and he didn't promise to protect the monopolies of the US corporations who owned most of his country and exploited his people for profit.
If you look at the history of the Cuban revolution, it was initially not Communist/Soviet aligned. The U.S. recognized Castro's government in 1959, but quickly broke with him after it was clear he wouldn't play ball the way previous Cuban governments would, and was going to nationalize property held by U.S. corporations. Cuba didn't formally become Communist until 1965 (although it was socialist) and was arguably backed into becoming a Soviet client state between 1960 and 1962 due to U.S. hostility.
That said, while Castro was a fairly benign Communist dictator, he wasn't as benign as Tito was when he ruled Yugoslavia. Tito was pretty much the archetype of a (mostly) benevolent dictator.

He did. Because of Guevara's anti Soviet, pro Chinese Communist stance, he became an embarrassment to Castro. The Russians viewed him as an undisiplined loose cannon, and after cutting off their support, even Fidel began to distance himself from him. In the last few months of his life in Bolivia he was isolated and alone. He and his followers were reduced to little more than banditry, and he did not die a heroic death, hardly the picture of an inspirational revolutionary that so many leftists seem to hold.
Fidel Castro's sister claims that Che Guevara was nothing more than a cold blooded assassin because he simply began to kill people without compassion. She can't even believe why Fidel has raise his memory in Cuba to that of a hero. She also says that he was one of the worst things that could had happened to Cuba under Fidel's rule, because aside from his 'evil' nature, he was made the Chief Economist of the Cuban Central Bank without knowing anything about economics.
