Many other dictators in the Americas have committed atrocities that far surpass the inhumane acts done on the behalf of Fidel Castro, so why is he the most hated?

I wouldn't call him the most hated. Why do you say that?

Historically speaking he is pretty far from being the most ruthless dictator in the Western Hemisphere or the world (especially when compared to Rafael Trujillo, Jorge Rafael Videla, Stalin, Hussein, etc) but the powerful Cuban American lobby tends to have more sway in the US which is why you hear more bad press about Fidel Castro compared with the others.

Pretty much this. On a scale of ruthless, vile dictators, Castro is definitely at the low end even before you factor in that his regime has actually done a lot of general good for the Cuban people. Most of the original Cuban exiles were either Batista's men or the wealthy and upper middle class, so both groups had a stake in maintaining the status quo and never forgave Castro for kicking them off the gravy train.

Of course, Castro being a "commie" automatically makes him far worse than such staunch American allies as Somoza in Nicaragua and Pinochet in Chile among many others.

People don't usually learn about all the atrocities committed in foreign dictatorships (not even the people living in them) until after those dictatorships end. Then the whole can of worms is opened for all to see the mess.

I say lets wait until the Castro regime falls, which should be any time (those guys are old and I doubt their successors will be successful in keeping Cuba in such a sorry state). Once that happens, all the truth will come out and then we will be able to make a much more appropriate evaluation.

We, the international community, have been through this before; so, there's no reason to expect anything different from this, one of the longest lasting dictatorships in the history of man.

What truth? The international community is well aware of the human rights violations of Cuba as Cuban dissidents blog and post videos from the island, not to mention the countless documentaries that have documented the injustices. The point of this thread is that compared to other dictators, Castro's regime is no where as bad as other brutal regimes.

The fact that Cuban Americans visit the country annually proves that his dictatorship isn't all that bad as some make it out to be.

Nobody is saying Castro is a good guy, but he's not in the same league as Somoza, Pinochet, Trujillo, et al.

I also beg to differ with you that the US government didn't know exactly how vile most of the dictators they supported were. We -- the US government -- gave chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein.

Castro is not a nice guy.

But since the USA has diplomatic and business relationships with all sorts of communist countries and evil dictatorships, I am puzzled about why Cuba gets frozen out.

Have you been to Cuba? I'll bet the answer is no. The average Cuban lives in squalid conditions ranking just above living in a mud hut. There is sewage running down the streets in Habana, people raise pigs in their government provided apartments so they can sell them on the black market and the alcohol rate ranks slightly behind the old USSR.
It's a regular peoples nirvana!
