Probably because of accessiblity to North America, and to a lesser extent Europe. Mexico has several big cities that can harbour far-away flights more economically, between that and its location in the world. South America is too isolated and fragmented in terms of major cities and attractions, while Central American nations scare the **** out of average people. It's big enough to have several distinct areas that will attract different types of people

Also, the food is among the best, if not the best in all of Latin America. Even the world.

How does Central America scare people more than Mexico? I have never heard of any central American cartels. And most of the cartels that operate in Central America are Mexican.

I don't know. I don't think it's justified, it just seems to be the way it is. Many people are definitely scared of Mexico, but people will still travel there. But somehow, if you say you're going to Guatemala or Honduras for example, people who don't know a lot about Latin America just get blown away and think you're a guranteed kidnapping victim. It's probably because everyone knows a little bit about Mexico, but not necessarily the CA nations.

I don't see that all,because of the bad reputation (drug cartel,illegal immigration and corruption),Mexico is one the most dangerous countries in the world.

The only thing that comes to mind is the very broad outreach that media companies (especially television) from Mexico City have in the entire Spanish speaking world. I would even say that on the whole Mexico City is much more influential than Madrid and that is quite something.

In the French world, Paris is king.

In the British world, its split between London and New York with NY being an 'offspring' of the former, so to speak; but, London never truly lost its power.

Actually, now that I think of it, its quite interesting that the Latin European countries produced much more important cities in their overseas territories than at home. Look at the Portuguese world, its quite possible that Sao Paulo is the king followed maybe by Rio de Janeiro.

Anyway, Mexican programming and cultural influence spans the globe, especially in Spanish speaking countries and that probably helps create a sort of affection towards this country. All over the Spanish speaking world kids grow up watching Mexican kids shows and adults watching Mexican novelas. There are production from other countries, but I don't think they have the outreach anything made in Mexico City has.

Mexico is really just a wonderful country. It has a magic to it. So many different beautiful areas to it. Old colonial cities, caribbean beaches, pacific beaches, desert, mountains, mariachi, mole, beautiful art. Indigenous cultures So many great places like Oaxaca, Puebla. Guanajuato, Tulum, etc..

There's a lot to like.
