Gabriel Garcia Márquez
Colombia's Nobel Prize recipient in Literature. Author of Cien Años de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude) and many others. His writings mesmerized me since I was a young man. He wrote in a way that resembled an intricate multi-colored tapestry. In his writings, I could hear the sounds, savor the foods, smell the aromas he so easily described.

On this day, his life has ended. But his writings will exist into eternity.

Jose "Cheo" Feliciano
His melodic voice and infectious style could make the worse dancer want to get up and dance to the rhythm of Salsa. His Boleros melted women's hearts, conjured images of genuine love, and convinced an entire generation that passion and true love are possible, probable, and could be . . . everlasting. His own marriage lasted 57 years.

Today, his life has also ended. But his music will be endlessly danced and listened to.

Fortunate are those of us who enjoyed the works of these two talented and above average human beings. May we be thankful for the joy they brought to our lives.

Gabriel, Cheo . . . descansen en eterna paz.

One hundred years of Solitude is now #2 on Amazon.

Marquez is very easy to read in Spanish. Not sure how well his works were translated. We read his books in high school and the whole class was very happy with his writing style because he was very easy to follow and his stories were engaging.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Some of Gabriel Garcia Marquez quotes about the Caribbean (he was born in the Caribbean region of Colombia):

“Me siento extranjero en todas partes menos en el Caribe”.
"I feel a foreigner everywhere except in the Caribbean."

“Ya para entonces había logrado una identificación absoluta con la cultura popular del Caribe, la única que reconozco como esencial e insustituible en mi formación de ser humano y escritor”.
"By that time I had an absolute identification with the popular culture of the Caribbean, the only one that I recognize as essential and irreplaceable in my formation as a human being and an writer."

In this video he speaks of the magic of the Caribbean (in Spanish):

Cheo Feliciano (one of his songs)

Two great Latin American men that have given so much to Latin American culture, one through his books and the other through his music. RIP

Add Sonia Silvestre, from the Dominican Republic, to the list of great people that have died.

She died today in Santo Domingo at 61 years old. At one time, I think it was in the 1970s, she was considered to be the most popular singer in Latin America.
