Hi everyone,

I would love to get your opinion on living in Miami vs Detriot vs Charlotte. Factors to consider:

-Salary would be the same (just under 40k)
-Looking for a community of young professionals
-Not into clubbing/drinking/partying
-Some sort of city life, however, would be nice
-I don't own a car - public transit (that is safe) would be great
-I'm okay with a car being a necessity, even if its not preferred
-I'm a female in her early 20s who may or may not be living by herself - safety is an issue
-Originally from a big city in the Midwest and likes the amenities of a city
-Preferably would NOT like to live hand-to-mouth and would like to save some of my paycheck at the end of the day
-Diversity of any kind is a huge plus
-I'm South Asian; some sort of South Asian presence would be welcomed
-I'm a practicing Muslim and would prefer to be in a place where Islamophobia will be less of a concern and where there might be a Muslim presence

Your thoughts?

Also, I apologize if this is in the wrong place (I'm new to city-data) and I'll happily go to another part of the forum if need be.

Most people post these questions in the CvC forum: https://www.city-data.com/forum/city-vs-city/

I think one big factor would be the location of your employment...in each of these cities it might be possible to survive without a car and commute via walking/transit, but it all depends on the exact location of your work. Good luck!!

Under 40k will be tough in Miami, however I'd still go there over Detroit or Charlotte (and I'm a Michigan native).

I loved living in Miami, absolutely loved it. I do think that it will be difficult to find a place to rent though. It's expensive there and you'll be scraping by at under 40k. I still recommend going there and working your way up there as opposed to Detroit.

Ps. Learn Spanish or you'll have a tough time there.

You're not into Partying or nightlife? Scratch Miami off ur list.
Making just under $40k and wanna live somewhere safe? Scratch Miami off ur list
Practicing Muslim who wants south Asian presence? Scratch Miami off your list.
Don't own a car? Scratch Miami off ur list.

I'd say Detroit or Charlotte would not only be more affordable, but you'd be able to find more ppl like yourself. A better "fit"

Detroit has the most Muslims out of them but you know Detroit is a broke city but you can live In the suburbs of Detroit. charlotte has the smallest Muslim population and the Muslim community there is disorganized and always fighting I should know I lived there for 8 years and I am moving back. Miami has a large Muslim community but I guess is the most expensive of them all. in the end if you are willing for a smaller Muslim community like charlotte and be able to afford living charlotte is your best bet. charlotte has 15k Muslims I believe most are in the north charlotte area.

Neither of these cities are comparable, totally different cultures in totally different parts of the USA. Wrong forum to post in. Good luck in your search.
