Let's first stop and think why the Venezuelan people elected Chavez in the first place! Or why it would come to the populace of any country to elect a socialist or communist!
There's no time to 'stop and think' about the past. The situation in Venezuela is a human crisis. Regardless of politics, regardless of the type of government they have, their people are suffering tremendously.
People are hungry, starting to become malnourished. People with serious illnesses aren't getting the assistance they need. Families who worked extremely hard to build successful businesses are being crushed.
At the beginning they were democratically elected, but now everything is lies and extreme corruption. Chavez's and Maduro's families have enriched themselves with millions of dollars, did you know this? Same with Fidel Castro. If these hipocrites truly believed what they spout, they'd be living the SAME LIFESTYLE as their people.
To be honest, they haven't done that badly. Bolivia especially is doing pretty well compared to what it was. However, these "power men" will very likely leave a power vacuum and weak democratic institutions once they're gone.
Yeah, I was going to follow up with saying that you're coming from where they were a few years ago, there was only one way to go.

Bravo to Evo Morales for putting limits on these greedy U.S. corporations, sucking all the resources from their country and paying the country a pittance.
Evo Morales all but told these corporations, we'll do business with you but, from now on, 80% of the profits stay in Bolivia, and if a 20% profit isn't enough, then go elsewhere.
Chavez, on the other hand, nationalized, his big mistake!

Last time I looked, many of Morales' settlements were with companies from Spain, India, Italy, Brazil and Argentina. Interesting narrative you've painted even if it's not real.
I just got done reading The Secret History of the American Empire by John Perkins! There was 2 chapters on Bolivia in there! The days of raping the South American countries of their resources, with mere Thank-You cards, is apparently over now, at least for U.S. corporations.
what would be the good of replacing one megalomaniac dictator/authoritarian guy with another?

I don't have a problem with that at all. We're all better off if the entire hemisphere is prospering. However, I'm dubious of Morales' ability to keep it rolling.

I'm more dubious of the rolling of the U.S. with their sky-high foreign debt!

Meh, as it relates to GDP the US is not much different than the Eurozone. The debt needs to be reined in, but it's not the crisis the opposition party always tries to make it.
