I'm wanting to leave the US and Panama looks attractive. I was wondering if there are any US ex pats here that have made the move, either for work or to retire? My monthly income is not much from soc sec ($1200 a mo), and I don't drive. Can it be done on that amount? Can you get around by bike and public transportation in the larger places like Panama City? And what about health care? Any affordable health insurance if you are not a Panamanian citizen? Thanks.
If you Google "retiring in Panama" you'll get multiple hits that are probable more accurate and credible than anecdotal information posted here. Good luck!
I am no where near retirement... but I have been to Panama and Costa Rica (yes only for a week and not exactly wondering around on my own too much) ... but other then the better weather ... I am not getting the great pull to retire there unless you are actually on the beach and even that can get a bit old fast if in an isolated place. Ex Why would someone want to retire in San Jose or Panama City? They are not bad places ... but not exactly feeling this huge reason for this? Compared to a major cities in the USA or Canada there just does not seem like that much to do if you have not much to do all day long because you are not working?
Anyone want to fill me in on why these places seem to be attracting attention for retirement? I have heard that a good number of Canadians have started to retired in Panama City.
I have a coworker who will be there as soon as he retires in a few short years. He already has a place down there and loves it. He visits so frequently he keeps a tan. (the dog!)
