as Mr.Falcon said, the carnival in Salvador (state of Bahia), and in Olinda/Recife (state of Pernambuco) are as famous (at least inside Brazil) as the carnival in Rio... they are very big, as tourists from all around Brazil go to Salvador and Olinda/Recife for the carnival

Only street parties, both in Salvador and in Olinda/Recife. Nothing like the Sambodromo with a spectacle to watch from the sidelines.
In Salvador their tradition is to have huge trucks with huge sound systems (and I mean REALLY huge), called "trio eletricos", with a band playing on the top of the truck. It's very, very, very loud.
In Olinda there are lots of small bands of brass instruments and percussion that walk the narrow streets of the historic city with thosands of people following them.
* São Paulo's Carnival is a joke through Brazil beacuse 90% of paulistanos hate it, the sambodrome has terrible view of the parede (it can be seen a little in the photo) and the counting of the votes for the champion has bizarre fights.
Interesting, I could actually get to Manaus cheaply now that flying Bogota to Tabatinga has become so cheap, like US$30 dollars thanks to a budding budget airline industry in Colombia. Unfortunately on the brazilian side (Tabatinga-Manaus), Azul is a bit more expensive but still doable.
Is the Manaus carnival during the same days as most carnivals (before Lent)? Or is it the Parintins festival?
Yes, the Parintins Festival is in June. They perform on thu, fri and sat. In Rio Samba Schools of the access group perform on fri and sat and the main group on sun and mon.

Samba School's Parades is in ''Sambodromos'' kind of specific stadium for that.
The second best samba's school paredes (after Rio) is in São Paulo including televised for whole Brazil although average paulista don't like samba and carnival how it is a huge city we have enough people for make this even though ''paulistas sambistas'' small minority. This year I will parede although don't like samba just for party and because I get it free
About the "not being accessable" comments it's very funny comming from the countries that create the rules (fees and procedures are defined in receprocity from Brazil) or plan to make melagomaniac walls...
You will admit that Brazilians are way more likely to attempt to remain illegally in the USA than will be the case for Americans wanting to be illegals in Brazil.
Its OK though. The bureaucracy involved in Americans getting a US visa is just what Caribbean tourist destinations want to hear.

but there are carnival parties all around the country... each state has different ways of celebrating the carnival.... here in my state, Ceará, most people from the capital, Fortaleza, leave the city during the carnival and go to the wild carnival parties in the small beach towns, both to the east and to the west of Fortaleza
Salvador has been popular outside of Brazil for some time now. Since Oludum made recordings with several North American artists.
Some even prefer it to Rio which is quite big and some think too commercial. Problem is getting to Salvador though. Fewer airlift options from North America.
